11/1/17

On a day that would decide league champions, CIF participants, who leaves it all on the course and who leaves with a bad taste in their mouth, Poly athletes turned in 26 PRs and several “near misses”! It was a day of many victories and a few disappointments for our Poly runners who, for most of the team, called this meet the end of the 2017 season. Our seniors were honored with posters designed by their teammates and months of hard work and miles of running were poured out on to the old Riverside Golf Course that now serves as the Riverside Cross Country Course. After this race, only those moving on to CIF Prelims will continue to practice hard while chasing their goal of advancing to finals.

Final 2017 Team Results:

  • Girls JV — 1st Place
  • Boys JV — 1st Place
  • Girls Varsity — 1st Place
  • Boys Varsity — 3rd Place (tie)

Girls JV: For the_DSC0903 3rd consecutive IVL meet, our JV girls scored a “perfect” 15 points. In all, Poly girls placed 9 runners in the top 12. Top finishers include: Lauren Vigrass (10), Teresa Rangel (11), Keysha Lusk (12), Soleil Russo (9), Celine Millanponce (11), Yulissa Medina (10), Isabel Avella (9), Lana Santiago (9), and Tiffany Jones (11).

Girls Varsity: In this race, three freshmen, two sophomores, one junior and one senior managed to complete the 1st place IVL sweep and secure the 5th consecutive IVL Champio_DSC0973nship for Poly High School. While it was more of a struggle than the last two league meets, three of our girls still managed to run PRs. Our finished order included: Elena Umana (10), Malia Benson (10), Kalista Tibbels (9), Kalea Ibarra (12), Helena Valdez (11), Alexis McPhail (9), and Sarah Helfand (9) and all were among the top 13 runners.

Boys JV: While this race wasn’t “perfect” like in IVL meet #2, their 25 points were 17 _DSC0922better than 2nd place and they looked good while doing it. Six Poly runners placed among the top 10 runners and 11 runners turned in PRs for the day. Top performers include: Ethan McDonald (10), Jackson Standerfer (9), Ian Hughes (12), Eric Sanchez (12), Nicandro Rosas (9), and Fernando Rosas (11).

Boys Varsity: While our varsity squad finished 2nd and 3rd in our two previous meets, on this day, we lined up to race missing our #2 and #5 runners due to injury and illness. The goal was to finish 3r_DSC0949d (no worse than 4th) and qualify for CIF Prelims. While the boys ran hard, they ultimately finished in 4th place. Valley View surprised North by finishing in the #2 spot, thus creating a tie with Poly for 3rd place. Since IVL Finals serves as the “tiebreaker” for CIF seeding, our boys team ended up with the #4 seed and out of CIF. Senior Lerenzo Gipson did finish 4th overall and will run at CIF Prelims as an individual. Top performers include: Lerenzo Gipson (12), Michael Utterback (12), Nick Valencia (11), Parker Moore (12), Nick Ayala (11), and Isaac Umana, (9).
