Since the Stanford Invitational was cancelled for 2017, the coaching staff decided to switch to an even bigger meet: The Clovis Invitational. The “big deal” here is that each year, the State XC Meet is held on this very course. As a result, many of the top programs in the state make the trek to Clovis, CA to run on the historic course at Woodward Park. This course is a 5k…meaning there are 200 more meters to deal with on this “rolling hills” type of course. Since this invite has both Varsity and JV levels, we took 26 total athletes to run.
Our Varsity girls came in 8th place as a team among 33 “XL” schools. Our top 5 girls all came in between 20:01 to 20:31 to show how successful “grouping” can be. Our JV girls were 19th out of 54 squads.
Top Performers: Elena Umana (10), Kalista Tibbels (9), Kalea Ibarra (12), Helena Valdez (11) and Sarah Helfand (9).
The Varsity boys didn’t fare quite as well as a team compared to the girls, but several solid times were had to make up for it. Lerenzo Gipson (12), Justin Bartlebaugh (11), Isaac Umana (9), and Brian Johnson (10) had great times that would have resulted in PRs on a 3-mile course.
Top Performers: The runners mentioned above and Andrew Carlson (11), Michael Utterback (12), Bryce McManigal (12), and Parker Moore (12).
