It isn’t very often when perfect weather is paired up with a really fast course…but this was the rare hand we were dealt for one of the largest high school cross country meets in the US…the Woodbridge Invitational. Most of our girls and all of our boys ran in grade-level races and managed to grind out a whopping 25 season bests and 11 lifetime personal records (PRs)! We also had many runners who were running in their first race…which counts as an “establishing mark” and not a PR. Needless to say…this night was going to be something special for many runners! It is worth noting that 10 athletes did not run due to illness and a few ran while fighting the sickness that swept through some of our team during the past few days. Now, lets get on to the specifics…you can also see our “Results” page for a link to more detailed results…
Our girls had a fantastic showing with 5 runners coming in under 20 minutes and a sixth right at 20:00. Freshman (you read that correctly) Kalista Tibbels ran a one-minute PR and matched sophomore Elena Umana (30-second PR) in leading our varsity girls team at 18:59 each. Kalea Ibarra (12) and Helena Valdez (11) were 22 and 45 seconds behind them. Freshman Alexis McPhail rounded out the top 5 in her first ever at 19:47. Other runners who ran PRs and had fine races include:
Sarah Helfand (9), Lauren Vigrass (10), Keysha Lusk…on a tweaked ankle (12), Teresa Rangel, (11), Celine Millanponce (11), Yulisa Medina (10), Lana Santiago (9), Isabel Avella (9), Maria Jaramillo (10), Natalie Anguiano (10) and Soleil Russo (9). Congrats to you all!!!
Our boys team had the unique opportunity to run in all grade-level races…soooooo Lerenzo Gipson (12) and Justin Bartlebaugh (11) pushed the pace and came away with 1st place individual victories and PRs in each of their races! Nick Valencia (11) also ran a PR in his first sub-17 minute race. Andrew Carlson (11) and Nicholas Ayala (11) rounded out our top 5 runners, helping our Junior Boys to a 3rd place team finish! Our boys team also turned in many PR performances on the day that included:
Parker Moore (12), Conner Clark (10), Nolan Hays (10), Brian Johnson (10), Ethan McDonald (10), CJ Valenzuela (10), Jacob Bartlebaugh (9), and Alfred Soliz. Several other runners ran solid “first race” efforts and should be proud of their performance!
