After two weeks of scorching temperatures, our athletes were looking for a break. Enter the Cool Breeze Invitational…where athletes still race 3 miles against top competition, but at the Brookside Golf Club (next to the Rose Bowl) between 5-10pm, when the temperatures are significantly cooler. The course was advertised as very fast (it was somewhat fast) and our athletes were primed to run fast times for an early-season competition. The added bonus to this race: running to qualify for the Clovis Invitational at Woodward Park in four weeks (the course where the state meet is held). With a mix of veterans with high expectations and new runners pushing for varsity spots, our team did not disappoint!!! For FULL results, check out our results page for specific info on individual times, scoring, etc.!!!
Our ladies posted some very solid times for an early-season race. For the second time in as many weeks, the varsity team was 4th overall in their race. Helena Valdez (11) led all Poly girls with a 19:44 effort. Kalista Tibbels (9), Kalea Ibarra (12), Elena Umana (10) and Sarah Helfand (9) rounded out our top 5 performers. If that looks like a “young” team to you, consider this: four freshmen girls finished among the the Poly top 11 group today and two others who are generally in that group did not run. Our ladies are looking very solid this year and we can’t wait to see them continue to improve! Other individual efforts (and we could mention many): Keysha Lusk (12), Lauren Defrank (12), Tiffany Jones (11), Celine Millanponce (11), Teresa Rangel (11), Yulisa Medina (10), Lana Santiago (9), & Isabel Avella (9).
Several of our boys came out with something to prove. In the early part of the season, we don’t generally expect too many PR (Personal Record) times from our veterans who are in shape year-round. Well, today, we had 3 upperclassmen (4 total) who turned all-time PRs, including our current #1, #3 and #7 runners! Lerenzo Gipson (12), Andrew Carlson (11), Nick Ayala (11) and CJ Valenzuela blazed to new heights and all boys listed here and below qualified for the Clovis meet. Our varsity boys finished 12th out of 37 teams and the heat is ON for the last few varsity spots! Other individual efforts (and we could mention many here too): Michael Utterback (12), Parker Moore (12), Bryce McManigal (12), Justin Bartlebaugh (11), Brian Johnson (10), Conner Clark (10) Alfred Soliz (9), & Isaac Umana (9).
Great Job Everyone…on to Woodbridge next week!!!
