Multiple Teams · The 2017 Cross Country Season Kicks Off at the Riverside Showcase!

While the end of one of the hottest first weeks of school could not come fast enough, some fast times were posted during a hot Saturday morning at the Riverside Showcase meet! Held at the Riverside Cross Country Course (formerly the Riverside Golf Club), temperatures were already over 80 degrees by 6am! The good news was, the last race was to go off at 9:40am, so the temperature was still below 94 when the racing had ended.

While this site will host another invitational meet, the IVL League Finals, and both CIF Prelims and Finals, Saturday’s meet featured the “short version” of the course at 2.25 miles (most XC courses are 3 miles). It is difficult to accurately compare our 2-mile time trials on the flat track that featured cool 8pm temperatures to the tougher terrain, high heat, and extra 1/4 mile length of this race…but, suffice it to say that the coaching staff were all very pleased with both the effort and the times posted on this day!_DSC0203 _DSC0212

Girls Team:

Most of our girls ran very well, showcasing some of the fruits of their summer training as our freshmen and new runners ran their first real race! It is worth noting that our Varsity Girls team took 4th place overall in a large schools division featuring two programs who went to State and only 8 points behind ML King (who went to CIF Finals last year). While we cannot post PRs (personal records) for a 2.5 mile course, we can highlight some of our girls who showed some significant improvement and/or posted very solid “1st meet” times

Top Performances:

  • Varsity:  Kalea Ibarra, Elena Umana, Kalista Tibbels, Helena Valdez, Sarah Helfand
  • JV:  Celine Millanponce, Teresa Rangel
  • Frosh/Soph:  Soleil Russo, Yulissa Medina, Isabel Avella

Boys Team:

Much like the girls team, our boys also posted some very solid times. We have many newer runners this year on the boys’ side and are excited to see several of them “fight it out” for 3-4 varsity spots. Veteran runners Lerenzo Gipson and Justin Bartlebaugh have been leading the way all summer and folks such as Isaac Umana, Ethan McDonald, Andrew Carlson are looking to close the gap! Our boys team definitely did not disappoint…several “surprise” performances complemented solid times that prove the hard work has been paying off! Just the same…the “rules” from above still apply when comparing numbers from the last 2-mile time trial to this race.

Top Performers:

  • Varsity:  Lerenzo Gipson, Justin Bartlebaugh, Andrew Carlson, Parker Moore, Eric Sanchez
  • JV:  Alec Cabral, Gavin Payne
  • Frosh/Soph:  Isaac Umana, Ethan McDonald, Alfred Soliz, Jackson Standerfer
